Shadows Of Being

Lady in white Will you help me get to sleep tonight I'm all wound up and not feeling right Take this sleep and off to bed To get the buzzing out of my head Filled with static like a radio A dead star burning black and dim Crawling down your open mouth Filled with worry and regret Wash the weeds out of your hair Where all the others are waiting down there The water shimmers in the moonlight Hiding me from your sight You wait down by the water's edge Where many men are laid to rest Your dress is silver in the fog As you float around the bog Your tongue glows in the night As you fill my heart with light I can see you now Lady in white I need to do what is right Make me dream again Lady in white

Lady in black with a heart made of lack And a kiss that steals the breath from me When I look into your eyes, they hypnotize me Like diamonds sparkling on the pale sea Drink from my soul, to make yourself whole While I steal from you what I need You are my twin in deed and of sin We drink from mirrors of mercury I want to swallow you up like the sea I want you to set my spirit free Steal all your ire, and breath made of fire That would satisfy me You can shape-shift all you like But you'll wither in light Chasing your shadow to escape me But life kills death, and death kills life And I'll find a way, to make things right And balance out that which evades me We're two souls bound together Two birds of a feather Two serpents eating each other When you take a wound, I bleed When I take a wound, you feed When you feed, I get what I need Your black widow shit won't work on me My sickness of healing, will poison your poison And infect you with love made of life And I'll destroy your destruction And make you radiate forever with light And in spite all you like, and try as you might But in the end, you can't beat me You can't beat me You can't beat me You can't beat me You complete me.

On a moonlit night Reflecting off the snow She was quite a sight to bestow She sat there in the ashes Of a burned down building frame Wearing sadness like a necklace That hung with heavy shame And I was sad to come here To see her in the snow All those left behind me And their families now widowed I put my tommy gun aside to join her Waiting by the gates of hell If it wasn't for my weakened heart I wouldn't have fallen for her spell I heard gunfire in the distance And the scuffle that I knew Would bring the rest to take her And everything we knew I'll follow you through sewers And catacombs lined with skulls Like the ones on your dress Oh you know the ones I know I'll dance on the corpses in the cemetary Further down the road And when I dance with you Let us dance real slow And though I wont kiss you yet Someday I won't hold back For now I'm going to cheat you Every time I get attacked I can see you in the distance I can see your red bow Tangled in the branches Just beneath a roosting crow Flirting in the graveyard With the moon shining a halo Some day I'll settle down with you And run a funeral home Have some stillborn children And dead flowers by the window And when I make love to you One last time And take my final breath I'll know just what it means To have lost the game with death

Oh my machine gun cries for home Under a heavy sagging sky That folds over like a listing ship Oh and my machine gun Cries for her prince She cries for my blistered fingers To caress her tarnished steel She cries an ocean For all the people That she has missed Now my girl Cries from beyond the grave She wants to wear the dress That burns all around her She wants to turn the rivers into Veins of gold She wants the taste of A dead man's kiss She wants the taste of A vulture's kill She wants to see my face again And she will not Let me go No she will not Let me go Now I am made of wonder No longer am I a man of this earth No longer do I fear Gabriel Nor his horn No longer am I trapped within a brittle skull I tread the path where No creature would dare to go

A raven sits perched at the crossroads Where a wind blows through a scarlet sky And on it carried a familiar whisper That told me my flesh is a lie Take me down to the town where there lives silence Down where the rockets arrived Where the wind blows dark and reaps the harvest And I know I cannot die In your arms where the children whimpered Under your feet where the soil cries The earth is solemn and heartbroken Over a future that we despised His sickle no longer hangs over And has torn down the entire sky And as God as my witness I'd give anything to stop this genocide Where he laughs for he has triumphed It is his world now it is his prize Our leaders are his loyal servants His legacy their enterprise Only the wind can call my name On this earth where she cries Where I'm not afraid of being alone I always was I will survive

A pretty shadow on the ground A little hollow filled with sound Bleeding all out and around The marble flowers in the ground I was once young now I'm a man Even now I don't understand Why we must be bound to entropy The tide of years it comes unseen As I lie here in this place I see myself laid out in a chain Of every person that I've been All tethered as a temporal stem The body withers and it rots I hear the growls of fighting dogs To take what's left to where they'll leave A home beneath the fallen leaves I breathe the water and it's thick It heals the hungry and the sick I'm born again under the waves I'll hide out there for several days A pretty shadow on the floor Beside where time leaks through a door Where other worlds are still asleep And waiting for us to take a peak I saw you as an awful mess At the station near the overpass Our dead freedom echoed dreams Carried by the wind it seemed I heard your voice in the autumn air You wanted me to take you there But where I've been and what I've done Can't be shared with anyone A pretty shadow beneath my feet While I'm standing in the street All I've been and all I've seen Now withering as shadows of being

about

This album is mostly about dealing with the inevitability of death, something which we all have to confront at some time in our lives, life here is seen more for its beauty as a temporary thing, a transitory state between this world and the next.

As a result, I wanted the music here to illustrate a state of hypnagogia, which I used as an environment to convey interwoven themes of life and death, awake / asleep, light and darkness, love and loss, creation and destruction. Mainly because sleep and the period between wakefulness and sleep is the principle medium for showing unconscious desires and fears.

The vast majority of these songs have female characters, which don't really represent people, but more symbolically as a foil to myself in order to add more dualism to the lyrical themes, and my singing style on most of these tracks was more melodic and higher-pitched and less aggressive-sounding than what I have used before working on this album.

The songs themselves also shift in their character, many of them have a traditional folk or pop style to them, which often transitions to a coda that is, louder, noisier and more abstract in structure. I did not want to stick to one single genre, or keep the songs in one place, so most of this is a big middle finger to classifying music by genre in general, which I don't really view as something for me to decide on what genre my music is, I'll leave that to people who listen to this instead.
