about

This song is a prayer to ward off insomnia, the woman I am singing to is a sort of water nymph, which has many names in European folklore, she represents sedation, calm, sleep, and serves as a metaphor for the calming onset of sleep and the kindness of women, of course with her malice evident but subdued.

I recorded the take used in this in the middle of the night, immediately after waking up, setting up my amps/mic/guitar, and did this take, then right afterwards I went straight back to bed, in other words, I sang this in the midst of a dream. My singing wasn't as good here as subsequent takes the next day, but I like this take best, as it best represented the state I was going for.

lyrics

Lady in white
Will you help me get to sleep tonight
I'm all wound up and not feeling right
Take this sleep and off to bed
To get the buzzing out of my head
Filled with static like a radio
A dead star burning black and dim
Crawling down your open mouth
Filled with worry and regret
Wash the weeds out of your hair
Where all the others are waiting down there
The water shimmers in the moonlight
Hiding me from your sight
You wait down by the water's edge
Where many men are laid to rest
Your dress is silver in the fog
As you float around the bog
Your tongue glows in the night
As you fill my heart with light
I can see you now
Lady in white
I need to do what is right
Make me dream again
Lady in white
